Dr. Alexey V. Alekseenko is the Head of Resource Nexus Laboratory of United Nations University Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES). Alexey is skilled in managing environmental and resource projects for industries extracting coal, metals, diamonds, and building materials. He has over 15 years of experience in topics ranging from pollution monitoring to the assessment and restoration of ecosystems disturbed by open-pit, underground, and placer mining. Alexey has conducted both field and desktop research on environmental resources affected by mining in Colombia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Mozambique, Russia, and South Africa.  At UNU-FLORES, he focuses on sustainable and resource-effective post-mining transitions with a special focus on the revitalization of post-coal landscapes. He aims to position the German lignite mining district of Lusatia as a model for numerous coal transition regions facing similar challenges.
